🚨 Scam Alert: Fraudsters Posing as Ohio BMV Targeting Local Residents

At Lipson O’Shea Legal Group, we take the safety and protection of our community seriously—which is why we’re sounding the alarm on a new phishing scam currently plaguing Ohio.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has issued an urgent warning after receiving multiple reports of fraudulent text messages sent to unsuspecting residents.

These messages claim to come from the BMV and falsely state that the recipient has an outstanding traffic ticket. The texts demand immediate payment to avoid a license suspension and may include links designed to steal your personal or financial information.

“Do not fall for this scam,” warns BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”

This scam is not isolated to Ohio—it's part of a nationwide phishing scheme. Unfortunately, the messages are convincing enough to trick even the most cautious individuals.

What You Should Do:

  • Do not respond to suspicious texts claiming to be from the BMV.

  • Do not click on any links or provide any personal information.

  • Delete the message immediately.

  • Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

  • If you believe you’ve been victimized, contact your local law enforcement agency right away.

At Lipson O’Shea Legal Group, we advocate not only for justice—but for awareness. These kinds of scams prey on fear and urgency. Taking a moment to verify before reacting can protect you and your family from fraud.
