A train derailment occurred on February 3, 2023, at 8:55 p.m. EST . The 50-car train derailment has caused big fire, evacuation and a controlled release of toxic chemicals in East Palestine, Ohio.
Residents are at risk of exposure to hazardous materials — defined as cargo that could pose any kind of danger “including flammables, combustibles, or environmental risks.”
East Palestine officials said 68 agencies from three states and a number of counties responded to the derailment.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the Federal Railroad Administration, there were an average of 1,705 train derailments per year in the U.S. between 1990 and 2021. A number of derailments have already been reported in various other parts of the country this year, and even in the weeks since the crash in East Palestine.
